hair diaries: how christine is embracing her gray hair
Here at amika, we are fascinated with learning and sharing the hair journeys of our community. Everyone’s relationship and journey with their hair is completely unique, and we find so much beauty in this.
Meet our friend, Christine Mai Nguyen, creator of many different art forms.
how did you find out about amika?
“I have a few friends who love amika products so through repetitive friend referral. That’s how I find out about everything cool! Through my friends.”
how long have you been a friend of amika?
"I started using amika products a little over a year ago. It all started with the Soul Food Mask; because my hair responded so well to this mask, I was open to trying every product from the line and so far, I’ve loved everything I’ve tried.”
tell us about your fave amika products + why you love them!
“soulfood nourishing mask is my Holy Grail. It’s helped my processed hair recover and grow long! I’ve given all my friends a sample of it from my own tub and have bought so many tubs of it just incase I ever run out! “
how would you describe your relationship with your hair?
“I’m grateful for my hair; I feel like since I’ve grown out my grays, it weeds out the energy I don’t want in my life. It shows me who is superficial, controlling, or critical of others and I don’t want those people in my space.”
do you feel that your hair is part of your identity?
“Not necessarily, but it is in some ways a reflection of my mood and state; sometimes glam, sometimes I just don’t have the energy to even brush it!”
you recently posted a YouTube video talking about your graying hair. how did it feel to create and publish that?
“Liberating! I get so many messages from people asking about my grey's, saying they want to grow out their natural color. I feel like making that video in some ways made graying hair more normal. It is normal! We should be decide and be confident with our decisions with our own hair!”
how was the response from your followers?
“So far it’s been overwhelmingly positive; there are some people here and there who have their own opinions and that is fine too. Gray hair isn’t for everyone — I think the message of that video is that we should make our own decisions and feel confident that it’s not abnormal to age.”
do you have any advice to those looking to embrace their grays?
“Just try it out; don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If you don’t feel your best with gray hair, life is too short to waste your confidence!”
