how to support your stylist during social distancing

Here at amika we’re a collective of creatives, hairstylists, chemists and product junkies. During these isolating times, our stylist community is being hit incredibly hard. This really hits home for us- amika was born in the salon professional space, and we wouldn’t be here today without the support of our stylists. We know hairstylists hold a special place in everyone’s heart and play the role of best friend, confidant, and someone you trust with your life (aka bangs).

As we continue to practice social distancing, there is a significant decrease or complete stop to salon traffic. We know the less contact, the better, but how can you continue to support your stylist outside the salon? Let’s band together to stand with our friends and stylists and make this time feel a little less scary and lonely.

check in on your stylist

You’ve probably seen this message communicated on social media through many people, but make sure to check in if you are close enough! Send your stylist a text, give them a ring, or even FaceTime them. They may be going through a lot of stress and uncertainty right now and would probably love to have someone listen.

buy a gift card

If your salon or stylist has the capability, buy a gift card now that you can use a later date for a service. When you emerge from this isolation, imagine how good it will feel to visit your stylist and feel like your normal self again. If this isn’t possible, book an appointment for some time in the future to put their mind at ease.

tip via venmo

We know these are tough times for everyone, but if you find yourself in a position to donate at all, considering tipping your stylist through their Venmo account. This will let them know that you still support their work and are ready to sit back in the chair when you can. Make sure to write a little message to go along with that Venmo payment so they feel uplifted.

use their affiliate link

If your stylist has any affiliate links with a brand you love, make sure to buy product through those. A percentage of the sale is given directly to your stylist. We actually have a stylist affiliate program that we’ve been running for a while. If you are a stylist or know a stylist that wants to sign up, tell them to click here!

leave a good review

Reviews go a LONG way, as many of us know. We shop a lot of times by that factor specifically. If you don’t have the means to do the above, you could always write your stylist a great review on Yelp if they are part of salon, or you can even tag them in a selfie on IG and let your followers know who styles your hair. This is a great way to give them a little more exposure and will definitely make them feel good. Additionally, if you know someone who is looking for a stylist, play hair match maker! Once they can conduct business as usual, they will have new clients on their roster!

Behind the scenes here at amika, we are working super hard to determine how exactly we can help the industry as a whole and do our part to make sure hairdresser’s concerns and worries are being heard. If you have any feedback regarding this topic, please feel free to share your opinion in the comments below!

I absolutely love this concept! In this currently crazy unsure time, people are quick to think of themselves & loved ones. But we need to remember those people, such as our stylists, lash techs, nail techs, etc. Who take care of us & our salon/beauty needs throughout the year. These people are only successful because of their businesses being successful. When no one is out & about during this time of high risk of viral infection, those people/businesses suffer. These are the ones who pamper us to perfection & provide free counseling/give us someone to confide in. That’s a pretty amazing match up of services! I think it’s a wonderful idea/concept to reach out, in any way(big or small) that you can. Show these awesome people who do so much more than just “hair, lashes, nails, etc.” that you are thinking of them & appreciate them, even when they haven’t just done something for you! You know they will before long, & have many times before. So show some love to them before getting a service immediately provided to do so. Come on ladies & gents, we all know we’ll be bk in their salons soon! Support the chair that you have sat in countless times in the past, & let them know your butt will be bk in that chair in the coming weeks or months after this scare has regressed & we are able to get our daily lives back to normal. Great idea Amika!!
