How to Watch 'Nightmare Alley' Immediately

Come for the eerie vibes, stay for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara on screen together again.

If you're on vacation and haven't yet settled on a new movie to take your mind off the apocalypse for 120 minutes, please direct your attention to '40s film noir remake Nightmare Alley. It's got King of Surrealism Guillermo Del Toro directing. It's got Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara on screen together in what has been brilliantly described by writer Brandon Taylor as "Dark Carol." It's got Bradley Cooper rocking a thin mustache. Even Stefan from SNL would be impressed, so what more could you ask for in a film, really?

Nightmare Alley is out in theaters beginning today (December 17). But how wide is the release? And for those of us who'd rather wear pajamas and eat candy canes than go out in public, will Nightmare Alley stream on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or one of the other 500 streaming services we're all somehow expected to have?

Here are your Nightmare Alley viewing options, all in one place.

First things first, give me theater deets

What if I want to stay at home, how can I watch Nightmare Alley online?

It'd be massively awesome of Fox Searchlight Pictures to reward us all for making it through 2021 by putting Nightmare Alley online for free, but alas, this is the movie industry so that's not how it's going down. Nightmare Alley is not available online as of December 2021 and will likely remain in theaters only until 2022.

Nightmare Alley originated as a book by William Lindsay Gresham, which was then turned into a 1947 movie starring Tyrone Power and then adapted into a graphic novel from Spain Rodriguez in 2012 plus a Jonathan Brielle and Gil Cates musical in 2010 that played at the Geffen Playhouse in L.A.

While you're waiting on 2021 Nightmare Alley to hit streaming services, you can check out the original source material (or any of the adaptations) pretty easily, with the exception of the musical.

When will the 2021 Nightmare Alley be available to stream?

The pandemic has changed how most movies are distributed these days, which impacts when fans can expect to watch Nightmare Alley from home. Some movies have skipped theater releases altogether, but a more common blueprint now involves companies releasing films to theaters for short windows of time before giving the rights to a streamer like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or Amazon Prime. This theater-only window typically ranges from 45 to 90 days. Disney (which owns Fox Searchlight Pictures, aka Nightmare Alley's distributor) said its 2021 movies are getting 45-day theater-only windows, which means Nightmare Alley will likely be available to stream starting in February 2022.

While that explains the when, it doesn't answer the where. We can get a sense of what to expect by looking at what Fox Searchlight Pictures has done with its other films this year.

Look at where other recent Fox Searchlight Pictures have landed:

Based on this ^^, it seems likely that Nightmare Alley will eventually be available to buy on Amazon and then stream on Hulu after its theatrical release ends, though that's far from a done deal. Until Fox Searchlight Pictures confirms a game plan, it's up in the air.

TBD on what the studios choose, but enjoy Guillermo Del Toro's nightmare however you watch it...and if you want to pretend it's Dark Carol the whole time, more power to you!
