5 ways to cure your dry, winter hair woes

It’s only fitting that this article is currently being written on New York’s first official snow day of 2022. There’s just something about the city covered in a fresh blanket of crystalline snow (that is, before it transforms into brown sludge). As enchanting as an NYC winter can be, there are certainly some downsides to it as well.

The mane (see what we did there?) downside we want to talk about today is the absolute havoc winter can wreak on one’s hair. It can cause dryness and dullness, which is obviously less than ideal. Luckily, we have 5 tips and tricks that can help you maintain the lustrous locks you deserve.

tip #1: don’t shampoo every day

We’re the first to admit, we love a good shampoo. (We are a haircare brand, after all.) However, even though they cleanse dirt and product build-up from hair, shampoos can also strip natural oils if used every day – something that we don’t want to do in the winter, a time when our hair is already susceptible to dryness. Don’t worry though perk up dry shampoo will be your best friend between wash days.

tip #2: wear a hat

Protecting your strands from environmental elements as much as possible is always a good idea – plus, it can really help with the whole ‘not washing your hair every day’ thing.

tip #3: avoid heat styling

We love a good blowout (I mean, hair blow dryer brushhello); your hair however, does not. This winter, allow your hair to air dry as much as possible. If you do use heat styling, we recommend using a heat protectant, like the wizard detangling primer.

tip #4: drink water

Ahh yes, the oldest trick in the book. Drinking water! How many times have you been told to drink more water? Well, there’s a reason for that. Keeping your body hydrated is beneficial for both your hair and skin, working to keep hair dryness at bay.

tip #5: use a nourishing, deep conditioning mask

A moisturizing hair mask does wonders for your strands – especially one that’s loaded with hair-loving ingredients. That’s why we love using soulfood nourishing mask. Jam-packed with sea buckthorn and jojoba seed oil, soulfood intensely hydrates your parched strands and never weighs hair down. You can use it as a weekly treatment (recommended if you have normal or low porosity hair) or an everyday conditioner (recommended if you have high porosity hair) after the amika shampoo of your choice.
