This year to celebrate our partnership with HairToStay, we would like to introduce a limited-edition version of our bestselling perk up dry shampoo. This nonprofit organization aims to increase awareness for scalp cooling technology—a system that works to prevent hair loss during chemotherapy—and provides financial aid for cancer patients to receive this hair-saving treatment. The limited-edition version of perk up dry shampoo will support HairToStay with $2 from every purchase going towards their mission.  

Founded in 2016, HairToStay began with a mission of building a nationwide subsidy program for scalp cooling technology, supported by partnerships with both philanthropic and commercial organizations. While its granted FDA Clearance, scalp cooling is not covered by most insurance providers and thus inaccessible for many undergoing treatment. The organization works to broaden the understanding and accessibility of scalp cooling treatments in the US. Get to know Bethany Hornthal, founder of HairToStay here and the inspiration behind the non-profit.

By using a scalp cooling system during chemotherapy treatments, hair loss can be prevented by impacting two cellular processes. Scalp cooling works by constricting the blood vessels in the hair follicles, thereby exposing them to less of the chemotherapy medication that often results in total hair loss. Additionally, the chemotherapy’s effects on the hair follicle are reduced due to the slowing of the cellular metabolism. By inhibiting hair loss, scalp cooling technology works to maintain a sense of normalcy and privacy in a patient’s life and can thwart the emotional damage that hair loss can often cause. 

It was a no brainer to choose perk up dry shampoo for this year’s partnership. Perk up dry shampoo is one of our bestsellers and a fan favorite of the brand, with people often saying it’s the product that introduced them to amika in the first place. We knew that it would make a big splash and, in turn, help us raise more money and awareness for HairToStay. We are also upping our donation to $2 a can this year, making it possible to get more patients subsidies.  

When it came to the design, it was important to us to make an ode to our limited edition fluxus touchable hairspray from last year, while still making it fresh and new. The elevated colors and special touches (new cap!) make this a cult collector’s item for perk up dry shampoo lovers and a great way to give back! 

There are a few ways to get involved:  

• When purchasing through loveamika.com, there is the option at check-out to donate anywhere from $1 to $10 to HairToStay.   

• Purchase one of the HairToStay limited edition perk up dry shampoo cans, in which $2 from every bottle will go directly to HairToStay. Snap a picture of your purchase and share on social media to spread awareness.  
• Salon owners/stylists - host a salon-a-thon, donate a percentage of every service to HairToStay, raise awareness through social media, blog about the cause, share on social media, or make a fundraising page via HairToStay.
